South America has an area of 17,840,000 km? (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. As of 2005, its population was estimated at more than 371,000,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America).
- Geography
Generally considered a continent forming the southern portion of the American landmass, south and east of the Panama Canal transecting the Isthmus of Panama. The continent also contains drier regions such as Patagonia and the extremely arid Atacama desert. Natural resources are copper, iron ore, tin, and oil.
- History
While perhaps the last continent--except Antarctica to be inhabited by humans, the history of SA spans the full range of human cultural and civilizational forms
- European colonization
The first phase of European activity in the Americas began with the oceanic crossings of Christopher Columbus (1492-1500), sponsored by Spain, whose original attempt was to find a new route to India and China, known as "the Indies"
- Independence
Because Spain was virtually cut off from its colonies during the Peninsular War of 1808-1814, Latin America was in these years ruled by independent juntas. These provisional governments claimed allegiance to the Bourbon king in exile, Ferdinand VII, but in practice operated independently.
- Economy
As of 2002, South America's unemployment rate was 10.8 %.
Due to histories of high inflation in nearly all SA countries, interest rates and thus investment remain high and low, respectively. Interest rates are usually double that of the United States. For example, interest rates are about 22 % in Venezuela and 23 % in Suriname. The exception is Chile, which has built its market economy longer, since the president Augusto Pinochet.
- Culture
Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion. French Guiana also has a large number of Protestants. Guyana and Suriname are exceptions, with three major religions: Christianity in general, Hinduism, and Islam.
Portuguese and Spanish are the primary languages of the continent. The majority of South Americans (51%) speak Portuguese. However, most South American countries are Spanish-speaking, and nearly all of the continent's Lusophones reside in Brazil.
SA nations have a rich variety of music. Some of the most famous genres include samba from Brazil, tango from Argentina and Uruguay and cumbia from Colombia.
